Dynamic Model of Occupation-Based Practice (DMOBP)

  • The model explains the ever-changing state of therapeutic interactions along a continuum between a discrete model and occupation-based practice. Occupation-based practice is defined as the use of occupation in assessment and therapeutic intervention approach working toward occupational outcomes. In contrast, discrete models are measurement and intervention approaches that follow an agenda other than health through occupation and could be recognized as a medical, educational, psychological perspectives. The reciprocally beneficial relationship between occupational engagement and health is foundational to the model and supports the need for the therapeutic use of occupation. This model can help therapists recognize the occupational nature of their practice and the influences that support or hinder their use of occupation in practice. The DMOBP identifies four major influences on the inclusion of occupation in practice as systems (i.e., documentation, administrative support, etc.), physical environment (i.e., space, materials and assessment tools, etc.), therapist (i.e., education and training, experience or belief in occupation, etc.), and client (i.e., acuity level, expectations, etc.). The model further distinguishes the four constructs of occupation-based practice as authentic occupation, meaningful and purposeful value, therapeutic intent, and engaged participation. Each therapeutic interaction exists along the continuum of occupation-based practice and is determined by the practice influences and presence/absence of the four constructs. The Occupation-Based Practice Assessment is a correlating measurement tool based on the model allowing therapists to assess their practice.

Vona du Toit Model of Creative Ability (VdTMoCA)

  • The Vona du Toit Model of Creative Ability (VdTMoCA) (Van der Reyden et al. 2019) is founded on the theory of creative ability developed by South African Occupational Therapist, Vona du Toit (du Toit, 1974).   This model's unique contribution to the Occupational Therapy profession is understanding people in terms of sequential levels of creative ability. The term creative refers to one's ability to change in response to life‘s demands (the creation of oneself), as well as creation of tangible things and solutions to problems.

     

Shades of Independence Model

  • This model is symbolized as an infinity symbol, which emphasizes that independence is a continuum without a start or an end. An individual’s independence can exist at any point within this continuum. Inside the symbol, there are two sides representing two themes, they are personal factors and environmental factors. The lighter (left) side of the model represents personal factors, which consists of personal attributes.

Biomechanical Frame of Reference

  • The theoretical base of biomechanical frame of reference (FOR) is considered as a remedial approach focusing on impairments that limit occupational performance. This FOR assumes clients are able to acquire the voluntary motor skills necessary to perform the desired human occupation, meaning that the underlying impairment is amenable to remediation. It also assumes that engaging in occupation and therapeutic activities has the potential to remediate the underlying impairment, and results in improvement in occupational performance.
